Three Artists Make Craft Cool Again

Three Twin Cities artists take handmade to a new level, proving craft is still cool. Growler magazine, March 2016

The air in William Dohman’s woodshop smells sweet and a little burnt. Saws and CNC machines grind to life with high-pitched squeals. Scraps of wood sporting large cracks lie about. But instead of throwing out these hunks of wood like other woodworkers might, Dohman collects them, turning other peoples’ unwanted scraps into covetable objects.

“I’d like everyone’s home to be designed and intentional, not just rogue,” says Dohman, the owner and sole woodworker at Oh Dier, a handmade home décor brand. “Everything can be beautiful or funny, whether it’s a doorstop or a ring box.”

Before launching Oh Dier, Dohman worked as an architectural designer at a small boutique firm. A few times a year, his company would toss out the extra wood from models and samples.
